This year marked the first annual mother-daughter trip with my mom. We’ve traveled together before, but it was always with the MR and my dad. This was our first trip solo. It’s something that we will be doing at least once a year from now on. In fact, we’ve already started brainstorming for next year. I wrote a trip recap for our East Coast Canada Roadtrip here.
1. You get to spend quality time together – When you’ve lived in a different state (or states, in my case) then your parents since you were 20, you miss out on that quality time. Visits are great but there is something about both of you being out of your element that makes mother-daughter
2. Learning more about each other – This year has been a year of “learning” for me in general and while parts of it have been pretty damn painful (both mentally and physically (thumb ouchie) some of that learning has been great. On our mother-daughter trip I realized that while I may know my mom in her role as a mother, I didn’t know her as well as a person. When you spend an extended period with someone you inevitably learn a lot more about them. And c’mon you aren’t the same person that you were when you lived at home with your parents. It will allow you to appreciate the other person for who they are.
3. You realize how much you have in common – You know that saying, “I am my mother’s daughter” or “Oh no! I’m turning into my mother!” You will realize just how accurate those statements are, I promise.
4. Taking a break from the day-to-day – Life gets pretty weighed down by minutia and travel is a great remedy for that. Getting out of your day to day routine is always a great way to stay present and enjoy the small things. This one kind of goes with number 1. Going to a completely new place together where neither of you is at “home” will bring so many new experiences.
5. You can do activities that your normal traveling partners don’t enjoy or that you wouldn’t do alone – I’ve been told several times by the Mr. that I exhaust him when we travel. My mom confirmed this on our trip. I exhausted her too! BUT my mom is down for pretty much anything which makes her a great travel buddy. We’ve seen many beautiful sunrises and sunsets together on girls trips we took this year. (My mom really like Acadia so we went back for a little 4 day trip!)
6. Crossing off bucket list items – While
7. Tons of pictures and funny stories – I am someone who always takes a million photos and always comes home with funny stories. Photos from mother-daughter trips make amazing gifts. These reminders and stories of your trip will allow you to appreciate the time you spent together in the future.
8. These are memories you will never forget – In my opinion, one of the best reasons to take a
