When we first got married, before we even had a place to live, we went and picked out a 13-week-old Golden Retriever puppy and named him Toby. We have always been dog people or, I guess a more accurate way to describe it, pet people.
We’ve had 4 dogs for the past 10 years and yes, people always think we are crazy when they hear we have that many dogs! We’ve sadly lost two of our furry children to cancer; Toby was our 10-year-old Golden Retriever and Tucker was our 10-year-old Australian Retriever (Australian Shepherd + Golden Retriever). We still have 2 from our original pack.
(Bama, Bammy, Bam, Pepe) is our lab, husky, and hound mix and has the most personality I have ever seen in a dog. She is sassy, bossy, and our current pack leader. Bama has not had an easy life; a few weeks after we found her she developed parvo, which usually kills puppies. I loved Bam within minutes of meeting her and there was no way I was going to give up on her. I nursed her back to health only to have her develop Addison’s disease at 5. Addison’s means an injection every 21 days and oral medication daily. This most likely happened because of the parvo as a puppy and means that her adrenal glands do not work the way that they should. She loves any kind of treats, hiking, camping and chasing her little brothers around. She is our sassy Queen B and we love her dearly! ***PACK ALPHA***
(Lou Bugs, Buggy, Boo, Booboo) is our little mutt. We have no idea what she is mixed with, but many have guessed lab, pitbull, chow and/or malinois. She is timid and a bit reserved because of the situation that she was in as a puppy. Lucy is afraid of men and takes a while to warm up to them. Lucy Bugs is also our resident worrywart and is a bit high strung. As we always say, Lucy has absolutely no chill. She loves ice cream, bones, long walks, my Dad and cheese curls (in moderation). Lucy is 11 and tore her ACL a few years ago. So she doesn’t get around as well as she used to but we make sure she gets out for her long leisurely walks (not on the beach though because she hates the beach). We love our grumpy little buggy.
Thorin Judge (Thor, Thorey, Budge) is the Mr’s 2-year-old GSD service dog. He has wanted a service dog since he got injured 10 years ago, but Toby, our Golden, was his boy and we just couldn’t do that to him. After he passed away we looked into organizations that provide service dogs to veterans and found that most had a 2 year waiting list. Not wanting to wait that long we decided to take a different route with Thor. Thor is a year old and just the silliest ball of love that you will ever meet! He loves tennis balls, ice cubes, and his little brother, Loki. At 85 lbs he is the biggest loveable goofball you will ever meet and such a ladies man. It’s impossible not to love Thor.
(Lokster, Loks, Woki, Wokster) is our 1-year-old husky-malamute mix, we think. Loki is a total goof but he’s also a lovable devil who is always up to no good! Haha! For example, he recently ate his own Soresto collar, the collars are thankfully not toxic, but they can cause blockages. After spending hours at the vet and being very dramatic, a few days later he was completely fine and acted like nothing ever happened. Trouble. He and Thor love each other and love to play! Having a GSD and a husky is basically like having the Looney Tunes Taz living with you. Loki loves chickens (as in eating them), being outside, digging, and dancing in the rain. He is 100% a free spirit and it’s hard not to love that cute little face even when you know he is so much trouble!
